Kelantan palace crisis deepens
KOTA BARU: The Kelantan palace crisis worsens with the removal of Tengku Seri Utama Raja Tengku Abdul Aziz Hamzah as State Succession Council chairman.
The termination, which took place on Thursday, was announced by the council’s secretary Datuk Aiseri Alias at a press conference here.Aiseri, who is also the Kelantan state secretary, said the termination was ordered by the Regent of Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, the eldest son of the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Ismail Petra.The council named Tengku Laksamana Kelantan Tengku Abdul Halim Al-Haj Sultan Ibrahim, 67, as the new chairman effective March 25.“Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra is still legally the regent and the new appointment (of Tengku Abdul Halim) is in accordance with the state constitution,” Aiseri said.Tengku Muhammad Faris was appointed regent on May 29 last year when the sultan was seriously ill.
Earlier on Thursday, Tengku Aziz was named as regent to replace Tengku Muhammad Faris at a press conference by the sultan’s private secretary, Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Daud.Wan Hashim, 64, read a statement issued by Tengku Aziz, who is the elder brother of Gua Musang member of parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.Later on Thursday night, Wan Hashim was arrested by police and taken to the state police headquarters for questioning but has been released on bail.A police spokesman said the case was being investigated under Section 419 of the Penal Code for cheating by impersonation.
